Enhancing Education through Gamified Open Badges

We are pleased to announce a new publication from the DISCO SMS project:
“Good Practices and Recommendations to Enhancing Education with Gamified Open Badges”, authored by M. Begoña Arenas and Dénes Zarka, published in Opus et Educatio (Vol. 12, No. 1).

The article explores how gamified open badges can boost student motivation and engagement in education. It explains the principles of gamification, clarifies the differences between digital badges and microcredentials, and discusses how motivational frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory support effective badge use.

Drawing on international case studies — including examples from the Hellenic Open University, Murdoch University, IBM, and City & Guilds — the authors present good practices for integrating badges into learning environments. Recommendations include aligning badges with learning objectives, offering variety, ensuring clear criteria, and integrating badges into Learning Management Systems (LMS).

By offering both practical guidance and real-world examples, the article supports educators, trainers, and institutions in designing engaging, motivating, and future-ready educational experiences.
